Escaping poor health, mental or physical, poverty and pain are goals most people pursue. Consequentially, conventional wisdom holds that health, wealth and pleasure (their opposites) are the keys to happiness. Yet, virtually every major religion and philosopher who has thought deeply about true happiness rejects conventional wisdom as passive and negative. Erasing or avoiding a deficit and happiness are not the same thing! Learning from life's challenges and active engagement in life are necessary to flourish.
